Summer Competency Academy

Building on the excellent work that our teachers had done over the last several years with ELOs, Grading Practices, and Common Assessments, we developed a model for summer school that would allow students to focus only on their areas of need instead of repeating an entire class.  I have served as one of the co-principals for this Summer Competency Academy for the last two summers and helped almost 400 students complete an A-G class so that they wouldn't have to repeat it the following year.

You can see some of the model by checking out the SCA Website as well as a presentation that was given to the PUHSD Board after the first summer.

Knowing that this extensive model for Summer School is reliant on some COVID funds, I developed a more sustainable model called the Summer Completion Option that many of the sites in our district will be implementing this summer.

World Language Department

I have had the opportunity to work with the World Language department over the last few years, leading district PLCs, organizing multiple release days for Spanish and ASL teachers, coordinating the creation and refinement of ELOs and common assessments, and supporting the process of Proficiency Scale completion

World Language (which once seemed to be a major barrier for A-G completion) now has one of the district's lowest D & F rates for any core subject area.

COAST data Analysis

Knowing that we wanted to have a better understanding of which students were on track for A-G completion at each year of their high school career so that we could intervene early and keep all doors open, I was part of a team that helped to create the COAST tool.  This is a tool that gives a quick snapshot of students who are on-track and off-track for A-G and CCI completion, and the reasons why.

Counselors and admin are able to use this tool to help with Master Scheduling and student conversations about options for registration.

SBAC SUCCESS!

Del Oro's success with SBAC and CAST scores over the last few years has been a highlight that brings us great pride.  I have been able to lead a team of teachers and administrators to facilitate the planning, preparation, and implementation of the SBAC and CAST tests and we have seen a drastic improvement in our student scores.  We now have some of the highest scores in the region and we have had several schools come visit to see our model.

A few of the changes that I have helped implement include students testing with a proctor who has chosen them, focused prep days with their proctors, breakfast celebrations each morning of testing, fun and meaningful incentives, a celebration rally with a raffle for improved scores, and a Chick-fil-A party for beating Granite Bay!
